Itoh peonies, also known as intersectional peonies, are a hybrid cross between tree peonies (Paeonia suffruticosa) and herbaceous peonies (Paeonia lactiflora). Developed by Toichi Itoh in Japan in the 1940s, these peonies combine the best traits of both parent plants, resulting in a stunning and hardy variety. Itoh peonies typically exhibit the large, showy flowers of tree peonies with the strong stems and vigorous growth habit of herbaceous peonies. They come in a wide range of colors, including shades of pink, yellow, orange, and red, and often feature unique combinations of colors and patterns. Itoh peonies are prized for their long blooming period, often producing flowers for several weeks in late spring to early summer.  

The number of Itoh peony varieties continues to grow as breeders develop new hybrids. As of the latest information available, there are over 100 registered Itoh peony varieties.
