What Is an Emulsion Lift Print?

An emulsion lift is a darkroom-era alternative photography technique in which the light-sensitive emulsion of a photographic print is floated off its base and repositioned onto a new surface. Because the transfer is done by hand, no two prints are identical — slight wrinkles, folds, and tonal shifts are part of the art. This process gives each piece a quality closer to a watercolor or painting than a photograph.
